Pilgrims Rest

Key green issues facing the business

  • Energy costs (LPG, oil & electricity)
  • Water costs
  • Maintaining high reputation for food quality

What has the business done so far?

  • Fish signVery strong local sourcing of food ingredients
  • Insulation
  • Resolve source of abnormally high electricity costs (faulty meter)
  • Resolve source of abnormally high water costs (underground leak)

Future 'green' developments

  • Reduce energy and water consumption
  • Enhanced communication of how green the business actually is
  • Draft and publicise an environmental policy
  • Use pavement blackboards and website specifically to communicate the 'local food' message
  • Ensure that thermostats are fitted to all radiators
  • Replace halogen spots with low energy equivalents
  • Consider fitting sensing light controls in toilets
  • Consider solar-thermal panels/tubes as means of providing hot water for cottages
  • Consider upgrading all outer doors to double-glazed insulation
  • Try fitting reflectors between radiators and wall (claimed to increase heat entering room rather than wall by 10-20%) - aluminium foil wrapped around cardboard apparently works!
  • Check that all toilet cisterns are either dual-flush or have hippo's fitted
  • Provide information about travel alternatives (eg by train)
  • Perhaps publicise strong local history of the buildings a little more prominently on the website

Top Green Tip

  • Utilities room is used as a drying room, making use of heat from fridges and use of quality local produce, which has led to many dining awards.
