Burnt House Farm

Key 'green' issues facing the business

  • Lack of separated meters making it impossible to derive cost/usage information
  • Attracting business throughout the year

What has the business done so far?

  • Website has excellent green information
  • Well insulated 'warm feeling' building - insulation has been designed into the building
  • A-rated appliances are purchased as replacements
  • Homemade cake is provided on arrival with Fair Trade tea and coffee
  • Recycling very systematic - colour coded bins and waste vegetable peelings to the pigs or chickens
  • Sell their 'Cranmore Crackling' organic been and pork products

Future 'green' developments

  • Green Policy to emphasise what's in place and in progress
  • Monitoring and metering
  • Upgrading boilers or moving to wood fuel
  • Solar thermal for hot water - with possible Carbon Trust zero interest loan
  • Heating log plus bird guide for guests

Top Green Tip

  • Bird feeding set up for guests - encourages rich diversity of birdlife. Bird nuts and bread are provided to feed the many varieties of bird life - visible from the kitchen glazed door. An excellent species survey was conducted (and mapped) seven years ago
