VisitBritain, the Automobile Association (AA), and the Tourist Boards for Wales & Scotland operate assessments under Common Standards. This means that the standards for accommodation are applied identically by each of the above organisations. The assessment process is the same, however, the package of promotional and other benefits offered by each organisation varies, as does the cost of participation with each organisation.
Some establishments choose to be assessed by more than one organisation in order to widen their marketing and promotional profile. In the event of two organisations giving a conflicting rating (this can happen on occasions, especially where refurbishment work has been completed between assessment visits), then the case goes before a Joint Committee comprising of senior quality managers from each of the assessing organisations for a decision to be made so that the same rating is applied by each organisation.
The following descriptions of what to expect apply to all types of accommodation and to both stars and diamonds. Use them as a general guide to what you can expect.
1 star : Simple, practical, no frills
2 star : Well presented and well run
3 star : Good level of quality and comfort
4 star : Excellent standard throughout
5 star : Exceptional with a degree of luxury
Note: During 2006 Diamonds were replaced with Stars, though there may still be a number of accommodation providers who are still displaying Diamonds.
