Museums in Somerset

Somerset has so much history that it is no wonder there is an abundance of museums enabling you to step back in time!

What might surprise you is that we have some of the largest collections in the UK.

Haynes International Motor Museum at Sparkford, for example, has the country’s largest collection of great cars from around the world while the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton houses the largest collection of naval aircraft in Europe.

As well as these larger museums we also have the bijou – such as King John’s Hunting Lodge in Axbridge – and the quirky - such as the Bakelite museum at Williton or the Brick & Tile Museum in Bridgwater.

We have museums in towns such as Chard, which is the birthplace of modern flight, the Museum of Somerset in Taunton, our County Town and the port of Watchet which has a boat museum.

We have them in our cities such as the Fashion Museum in Bath and the local museum in Wells.

We even have them in villages such as the museum of prehistory in Cheddar and the TV & Radio Toy Museum at Montacute.
