Castles, Caves & Abbeys in Somerset

One of the greatest natural wonders in the UK, Cheddar Gorge, has more to offer than just spectacular views, sheer cliffs and free-range goats.

Underneath it are the famous show caves which were discovered more than 100 years ago and have been thrilling visitors ever since.

Not content with one set of superb caves, Somerset has more.

At Wookey Hole there are more caverns and an underground river at which to marvel.

In August 2015, a new cave there with a rare rock formation was opened to the public for the first time adding to the existing attraction and creating one of the biggest show cave systems in Europe.

Excavated underground spaces like those at Cheddar and Wookey Hole are a combination of a natural phenomenon and human endeavour which is what you also find when you visit many of Somerset’s castles as they were built at natural vantage points giving commanding views over the surrounding area.

The County has a dozen or so castles on mumps and bumps in the landscape and in various states of ruin or repair.

Wholly down to human endeavour are the abbeys in Somerset and one has to wonder at the ingenuity that enabled them to be constructed in an age before computers and mechanical lifting gear.

One of England's earliest and most fascinating abbeys, is Glastonbury.

One of the most visited places in the South West is Bath Abbey and one of the most tranquil must be Cleeve. And don’t miss the only complete monks' thatched lavatory in England at Muchelney Abbey.
