Visit Taunton Castle
Housed in Taunton’s historic castle, the Museum of Somerset tells the county's fascinating story from prehistoric times to the present day. Within the 12th century castle walls you’ll find contemporary gallery spaces and great family visitor facilities, all situated within the vibrant town centre.
Discover 400 million years of history
With an amazing nine themed galleries, each with its own distinctive character, there’s something for everyone to discover. Our ‘must see’ exhibits include a 200 million year old Plesiosaur fossil (a type of marine reptile); the impressive Low Ham Roman mosaic; a stunning Bronze Age Gold Torc; the Giant’s Shoes worn by 7ft4 Joseph Sewell; and the Banwell Bear skull of an 80,000 year old Ice Age hunter-killer. The museum also houses The Somerset Military Museum.
Activities and events
For families there are activities throughout the galleries including dressing up like a Roman and in military uniform, making ammonites and mosaics, building towers and arches, and playing digital games.
We also offer a number of regular family activities so why not time your visit with one of our regular events?
Object handling – every Tuesday
Toddler explorers – first Friday of the month
Family fun – last Saturday of the month
Entry to the museum is free but donations are welcome. There may be a charge for some activities, events or exhibitions. Our current exhibitions can be found on our website.
Café and shop
The Castle Café offers a selection of home-made Somerset treats, from soups, sandwiches and salads, to pastries and home-made cakes. You can also visit the museum shop which stocks a range of reasonably-priced toys, cards, books and gifts including the ‘Made in Somerset’ range of local food and drink.
