Description

The quintessential English cottage garden created by the celebrated 20th-century plantswoman and gardening writer Margery Fish and made famous through her many books. It is a unique garden of great beauty and charm with noted collections of snowdrops, hellebores and geraniums and an excellent specialist plant nursery, café and gallery.

East Lambrook Manor Gardens

East Lambrook Manor Gardens in South Somerset is a hidden gem, yet it is easily accessible from the A303 at South Petherton, near Yeovil. The home from 1938 to 1969 of the doyenne of cottage gardening Margery Fish, it was here that she developed her own unselfconscious style, combining plants in a relaxed and informal manner to create a garden of great beauty and charm that has encouraged generations of budding gardeners.

The internationally famous garden was given Grade-1 status by English Heritage in 1992 and is recognised as the premier example of the English cottage garden style. Winding paths between abundantly planted beds and borders, often edged with the local hamstone, typify the garden which is divided into different areas such as the Terrace Garden, Silver Garden, Lido and Ditch. The latter, along with the Woodland Garden, contain most of the garden’s extensive collection of snowdrops and hellebores.

The Malthouse is home to the café and Malthouse Gallery, which holds exhibitions of work by local artists. The Margery Fish Plant Nursery specialises in cottage garden plants and interesting perennials.
