Ride with the Posse

Whether your choice of saddle is on a mountain bike or a pony there is plenty of scope to enjoy the fresh air and splendid countryside in Somerset which has more rights of way than almost any other county in the UK.

If you are an experienced rider with your own horse there are more than 1000km of bridleways, many of which are in the sumptuous Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or Exmoor National Park. It is also possible to ride on the beach at spots such as Berrow and Blue Anchor or through forests.

If you are a novice, there are several riding centres catering for a range of ages and abilities from those who have never sat on a horse to those who have ridden competitively wanting to book specialist lessons and clinics. The Exmoor Pony Centre offers taster sessions and treks with Britain’s oldest native breed of horse. There are even riding stables with accommodation attached where families can stay and ride out together. Don’t forget the donkey rides on the sand!

As well as attracting horse riders, the Quantock Hills have become a major draw for Mountain bikers with some challenging climbs and downhill runs. In fact Somerset features twice in the Mountain Bike Rider’s 20 best trails in the UK, once for the Quantocks and once for Exmoor  so it is perhaps not surprising that the champion Atherton siblings hail from here.

If you don’t want to hurtle downhill on a bike but prefer to meander along well sign posted cycle routes you are in luck too because National Route 3 takes you across Exmoor, along canal paths, through the Levels, up into the Mendips and on towards Bath.
