Climbing can be a case of an individual pitting him or herself against the wall or crag and making it to the top. It can also be an excellent group activity for families or friends and the good news is that Somerset, particularly the Mendip Hills, has some of the best limestone climbs in the Country.
Even better news is you don’t have to be an expert because there are a number of companies who offer climbing as one of the activities to try. Cheddar Gorge – one of the UK’s top natural wonders – has hundreds of climbing routes among 27 different crags and there is room for novices under instruction as well as intermediate and advanced climbers who can explore traditional or sports routes. The bonus is the views are breathtaking.
As well as numerous quarries and various cliffs and peaks, there are coastal climbs at places such as Brean Down and Exmoor. Climbing isn’t restricted to walls and crags. You can climb below ground in our cave network under the Mendips. Above ground again – for the young at heart – there are high ropes and trees; just head for the adventure companies for more details.
