Parks & Gardens in Taunton Deane

Wherever you go in Taunton you’re never far from a park.

Taunton Deane is responsible for maintaining more than 109 hectares of public open spaces, including three major Green Flag Award parks and 102 play areas.

Its most prestigious open space is undoubtedly Taunton’s Vivary Park, which still forms a direct green link between the heart of the town and open countryside. It occupies the site of a mediaeval vivarium, or fish farm, which supplied the inhabitants of Taunton castle and occasionally the royal household.

Through it flows the Sherford Stream, a tributary of the Tone, and as well as open green spaces and flower beds which become home to more than 56,000 bedding plants every year there are tennis courts, a golf course, a model railway track and children’s play areas.

Vivary Park, which belongs to the European Garden Heritage Network, also hosts the town’s annual flower show every summer.

Elsewhere in Taunton French Weir Park is a delightful open space on the banks of the River Tone while further downstream Goodland Gardens has been laid out with riverside walks and seating areas on the site of old wharfs.

At the eastern end of the town Victoria Park’s 5.7 hectares contain two play areas, a small ornamental garden, three football pitches and a pavilion with a small meeting area used by Victoria Park Action Group as a base for its activities.

Equally cherished and well-used by locals is Wellington’s own park, just off the town centre.
