Set in the beautiful wooded valley of Oare Water. Oare Church was the scene of Lorna Doone's wedding in the famous novel by R D Blackmore. Memorial to author, whose grandfather was the rector c1809-42. Present churchwarden's grandfather was John Ridd, churchwarden c1914-25. Georgian box pews, pulpit and reading desk. A 12thC font, 15thC chancel and nave, 19thC sanctuary and tower.
Nearest major road is A39. Take A39 west to Exmoor. Minor road left close to Somerset/Devon boundary, signposted Oare.
Nearest station is Taunton. Bus to Minehead, bus to Porlock, taxi or 6 mile walk to Oare. Bus 300 (Taunton) Minehead, Porlock, Oare and Lynton.
