The monastery was first established at Muchelney by Ine, a 7thC king of Wessex. It was re-founded about AD 950 and lasted for nearly six centuries. The present remains date largely from the 12thC. The best preserved feature is the abbot's lodging which had only just been completed when the abbey was surrendered to Henry VIII in 1539.
