Chard and District Museum is in Godworthy House, some three hundred yards from the Guildhall on the A30 towards Honiton. Some of its buildings date from as early as the 16th century.
One of the most important displays is on John Stringfellow, a pioneer of powered flight who flew a steam-powered ten-foot wingspan aircraft in a disused factory in Chard in 1848. The Museum has replicas of this plane and others designed by John Stringfellow and his partner, William Henson.
Other displays cover social and domestic life, agriculture and industry, cider-making, local churches and many other aspects of local history. A newer building contains an exhibition on another local pioneer, James Gillingham, whose company made artificial limbs in Chard from the 1860s right up until 1950, together with displays on lace-making and local engineering. Many of our farming and other machines are displayed in the open areas around the Museum.
