Just to the east of Ilminster, where the former marshes of the Somerset Levels join the rolling Dorest uplands and astride the Old Roman Fosse Way, lie the Seavington towns: St Mary & St Michael. It is an unspoilt area, deep in rural Somerset and little changed by modern times. The two villages, all but indivisible, have a 14th century church, still boast three working farms and have a popular Public House, providing both lunch and evening meals seven days a week.
Pheasant’s Roost is a just completed, very high quality and sympathetic conversion of a former 18th Century low barn, with massive oak beams, original external stonework and fronting a quiet country lane. The cottage offers an extremely comfortable base from which to visit either the Levels, rich in social history and wildlife, the wonderful scenic Dorset countryside of Thomas Hardy or the many National Trust properties close by (Montacute, Tintinall, Bassington & Stowhead) and classic gardens (East Lambrook, Hestercombe & Forde Abbey). To these will shortly be added the spectacular Victorian country house and estate of Tyntes field. Weymouth, Lyme Regis and their World Heritage coastlines, and the Georgian city of Bath are all within easy driving distance. Meanwhile, Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park is but 15 minutes drive away. Downstairs, the cottage is floored throughout in waxed oak and provides an entrance hall with a rising staircase, a comfortable sitting room, a generous & luxuriously fitted kitchen and dining room and a cloak room. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, two doubles and one single and a bathroom. The cottage is double-glazed throughout and is well equipped. A cot and high chair are available on request. The cottage is approached through a fully fenced, flagstone private courtyard, with garden furniture for sunny meals in quiet seclusion. There is a garage space for one car and off-road parking for another vehicle.
South west Train’s nearest main line station is Crewkerne. Although unfortunately the village no longer has its own shop, there are food shopping centres in both Ilminster and South Petherton, each about three miles away and the village has a country bus service to both towns. Car hire can be arranged. Lettings from 3:00pm Saturday until 10:00am the following Saturday. Linen included. Dogs welcome.
