Mill Lodge at Burcott Mill is a newly converted holiday apartment, which offers modern comforts in a unique and historic setting.
The first Burcott Mill was built for the Bishop of Wells around 950AD. Today we are both a commercial mill and a working museum, spanning 1,900 years of British milling history. We use our 1,000-year-old-water channel to operate 140-year-old machinery, to produce our handcrafted wholemeal flour.
You may visit the working mill, at your convenience, during your stay
Mill Lodge links 2 of the mills working areas – the Stone Floor where our flour is made and, above it, the Granary where our grain is stored. From the privacy of your accommodation, you have exclusive viewing onto the Stone Floor.
On one level there is an open plan kitchen and dining area, twin bedroom, and bathroom. Upstairs is the living room (double sofa bed) and a galleried play area. Mill Lodge is accessed from a courtyard, which house the waterwheel and other mill workings. Here you will also find our tearoom, open Easter to October. Within our grounds are an adventure playground, picnic area and a variety of small animals and wildfowl.
Mill Lodge is accessed via a steep stone staircase (with handrail). It may not be suitable for very small children, the very elderly, or people with walking difficulties.
The front door leads into an attractive open plan dining area. Beyond is the fitted kitchen including oven, hob, fridge, microwave and CD/radio. There is a window onto the mill here with blinds for your privacy. Also on this level is the bathroom with bath, shower, large screen colour TV, DVD, with freeview, and the galleried play area with colour TV/video and beanbags for the kids. A camp bed and cot are available.
Just a few minutes walk finds the heart of Wookey village with its stores, church, pub/restaurant and hairdresser. There is a farm shop nearby with post office. Directly opposite is a free house pub/restaurant.
England’s smallest city, Wells, is 1 mile away: Cathedral, Bishop’s Palace, and twice-weekly market. Mystical Glastonbury is a 15-minute drive: Arthurian legends, the Abbey and Tor. Only a few minutes more to Street: Clark’s Village factory outlet, outdoor swimming pool. Cheddar Gorge and caves are a 20-minute drive. Closest to home are the famous caves at Wookey Hole. Not forgetting the Somerset levels, the Mendip Hills, cider farms, Weston-super-Mare, Bath, Bristol. All accessible within 1 hour. You’ll need at least a week to see it all!
A cot and high chair is available. Baby-sitting can be arranged, if available, for an extra charge.
Mill Lodge has individually controlled electric panel heaters in all rooms, so you choose your own temperature.
Burcott Manor has a large, private car park. We allow vehicle access to the front door of Mill Lodge for loading and unloading.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. Much of our livestock is free range!
Mill Lodge is within a working watermill. For everyone’s safety and comfort smoking is not allowed in any of the buildings.
