Highbridge

Address:

Highbridge

Highbridge is a small market town near to Burnham-on-Sea, on the edge of the Somerset Levels.

The town grew in importance with the extension of the Somerset and Dorset Railway and is still the main point of arrival for rail passengers coming to Burnham, Berrow and Brean.

Highbridge is the birthplace of Frank Foley, often remembered as the 'British Schindler'. Foley worked for the British Secret Intelligence Service and helped thousands of Jews escape from Nazi Germany. A statue depicting Foley stamping the visa of a Jewish refugee stands in front of the Highbridge Community Centre.

Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park is also situated in Highbridge and is run by Sedgemoor District Council. The park covers approximately 42 acres and includes lakes, a number of walks, skate park, children's play area, picnic areas and BMX track. The lakes can be used for fishing and by radio controlled boats.

The Brue Estuary Path, which follows the National Cycle Route Number 33 and is run by Sustrans and the National Cycle Network, begins in Highbridge and runs through Burnham-on-Sea, Berrow and along to Brean.
