Traditional Skills

The most important wetland area in the UK, the Somerset Levels is the heart of the English Willow Industry as it provides perfect conditions for willow growing. Basket making willow shoots – known as ‘withies’ – have been grown by generations of the same families on the Levels which is the only area where it is still grown for baskets and fine charcoal.

Harvested in winter months, the crop is used for a variety of purposes today including garden hurdles and fencing, sculpture and coffins. The two producers – English Willow Baskets and Musgrove Willows – both run regular courses for people wanting to learn the ancient craft.

Among other crafts to be learned on a Somerset working holiday are cheese making, brewing, flour milling, weaving, leather crafting, pottery, dry-stone walling, photography and hedge-laying.
