Steeped in history, legend and mysticism, with a unique landscape, it is little wonder that Somerset and Exmoor have inspired some of our greatest and most creative minds. They continue to do so today as many artists and writers choose to live here and numerous movies and TV shows are shot on location in the county.

The 18th century Romantic poets, such as William Wordsworth, favoured natural and landscape themes and were captivated by the beauty of the county’s moors and coastal views. Wordsworth often stayed with his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who having spent his honeymoon in Clevedon moved to Nether Stowey, and the pair walked regularly in the Quantocks. You can follow in their footsteps using the Coleridge Way.

On Exmoor you can go on the trail of the doomed Lorna Doone, whose creator R D Blackmore was inspired by a holiday there, taking in Oare Church via the spectacular steep wooded lane.
