Farmers Markets

Think Somerset and you probably think cider and cheese but there is so much more this fertile County produces in abundance. The combination of a favourable climate, lowland pasture, hillside grazing and wide open spaces makes it ideal for meat and fruit production. It is the quality of the produce for which the County is rightly renowned, particularly its dairy foods.

Home of the UK’s favourite cheese, Cheddar, Somerset now supports numerous firms of all sizes benefitting from the ideal conditions. Similarly, the County’s best known beverage, cider, is now produced on a grand scale in factories as well as by dozens of small family businesses. The last few decades have also seen the rise of the microbrewery and Somerset’s contrasting scenery is mirrored in the diversity of flavours from the local water and choice of ingredients.

The sheer number of farmers’ markets, farm shops and food festivals is testament to the value that is put on good locally sourced ingredients in Somerset. No round-up of the County’s food and drink could be complete without a reference to cream teas when the County produces some of the finest strawberries and clotted cream around.
