Food & Drink

If Kent is known as the Garden of England then perhaps Somerset is its picnic basket. It is, after all, famous for the UK’s favourite cheese - which originated in the village of Cheddar - and for having the perfect soil and climate combination for producing cider. What great ingredients for a picnic: cider or apple juice and cheese with some artisan bread. These Somerset staples can be found at any of the regular Farmers’ and Country Markets now associated with most of the County’s towns.

Agriculture and Food and Drink products are major industries for Somerset so it is no surprise that many of its finest restaurants and pubs choose to look no further than the County boundary for the majority of their supplies. Whether it is fish, fruit, vegetables, meat or even spring water – all can be sourced here. Some of the most enterprising and sustainable businesses are making a virtue of looking even closer to home in among the hedgerows and meadows around them to forage for their suppers and there are courses on how to do this safely and productively.

With so much to celebrate on the menu in Somerset it is inevitable that festivals have grown up to promote all things local and edible. The biggest in the South West in the Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival and there are a number of others throughout the year and across the County.
