Festivals & Shows

When it comes to festivals and shows, Somerset can boast the biggest and best of them all. Glastonbury, which began on a farm in 1970, has become the largest greenfield festival in the world and the Royal Bath and West is now the UK’s only show that last four days.

As well as these two giant attractions, Somerset also hosts a myriad of smaller events reflecting its rich heritage especially maritime, historical, agricultural and cultural. These range from the more conventional such as Mid Somerset Agricultural Show to the somewhat more obscure Queen Caturn’s Night in Watchet. They encompass food, field sports, folklore and much more.

No mention of festival in Somerset would be complete without reference to another proud claim to fame which is that Bridgwater, whose carnival credentials date back centuries, holds the largest illuminated procession in Europe attracting around 150,000 spectators. It ends with a tradition known as ‘squibbing’ whereby around 100 people stand in line in the High Street holding specially made fireworks.
