Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary at their annual Air Day on Saturday 10 July 2010 to an expected audience of over 35,000 people. It was commissioned as HMS Heron on 18 June 1940 as a base for naval fighter aircraft. Since then it has grown to become a multi-role air station and has become the base for the Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) and Lynx Helicopter Force (LHF) as well as home to the Royal Navy Historic Flight. It is one of the UK’s busiest military airfields operating over 100 aircraft on 1,400 acres of airfield sites.
An extensive flying and static display will take place to mark this significant anniversary with historic aircraft such as the Swordfish, Seafire, Sea Fury, Sea Hawk and Sea Vixen, coming together with other vintage aircraft and their modern counterparts to highlight the role that RNAS Yeovilton Squadrons have played, and continue to play, in operations throughout the decades to the present day.
Saver Tickets available from local Tourist Information Centres.
