Food & Drink in Somerset

Cider and Cheddar Cheese are what Somerset is perhaps most famous for but with so much other fantastic local produce on offer, it is hard to know where to start.

A good place might be one of the farmers markets that are run regularly in many of our towns and villages or you could call in to one of a growing number of excellent farm shops.

We also have some well-established food festivals in the County.

If you prefer someone else to do the cooking, there is no shortage of first class places to eat including plenty of award-winning pubs, restaurants and tea shops.

Somerset is the home of Thatchers Cider which has been produced in Sandford for more than a hundred years and it also has more than a dozen smaller cider makers operating who are helpfully listed in a handy guide.

If your drink of choice is wine you are in luck too as we have vineyards here who are winning international acclaim.

Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is one of the few places in the country where Cheddar Cheese is still made by hand and you can arrange to go and watch the process.

What you might not know is that the village was also once famous for its strawberries which used to be transported on the Cheddar Valley rail line - now a cycle path.

Our food heritage also includes Yeo Valley yogurts, Miles Tea & Coffee, Exmoor Lamb and smoked eels.

So, while you're trying to decide which of these treats to track down first, why not enjoy a Somerset cream tea with homemade scones, farmhouse clotted cream and Whortleberry jam, which is unique to the Exmoor area.

We are not precious about whether you cover your scones with jam or cream first, just as long as you have lashings of both!
