Wedmore is the principal village on the Isle of Wedmore, a ridge of higher land rising out of the Somerset Levels. Wedmore is a prosperous and thriving village, with a wide range of specialist shops, restaurants and coffee shops.
Wedmore is steeped in history and has been a settlement since early times. In the Saxon era, Wedmore belonged to the Kings of Wessex and in 878 AD Alfred the Great made peace with the Danes here. Today, a range of interesting architectural styles adds to the charm of the village.
This area is one of the best places in the country for birdwatching. The peat moors are a rich source of food for the birds. Limestone caverns dot the surrounding landscape, as do nature reserves. Old farmsteads sit amidst the rolling green hills.
