Axbridge is a charming market town at the foot of the beautiful Mendip Hills, near to Cheddar, with a character all of its own. Once part of a Saxon defence system against the Viking invaders, its history goes back to King Alfred's time.
It was part of the royal manor of Cheddar, which prospered with the wool trade and has been fortunate to retain a core that has changed relatively little. The medieval square has half-timbered buildings, a handsome church, numerous specialist shops, restaurants and cafes. Also in the centre is King John's Hunting Lodge, an early Tudor merchant's house that has been restored as a museum with many interesting historical artefacts from the local area.
Take the town trail which will help you discover the main historic features of Axbridge, a town whose history goes back over 1,000 years.
