If you want to spend a day relaxing, enjoying lovely food, beautiful scenery and old town charm, then Somerton, located in the heart of  Somerset, is the place to visit.

Approaching the centre along North Street, you reach Cow Square with its Edwardian water fountain and some splendid houses from the 17th  and 18th centuries. Continuing along Broad Street with its finely proportioned houses, you will find that Somerton has an open and welcoming feeling.
The Market Square is the historic heart of Somerton. Here you will find the Church of St Michael and All Angels, with its rare octagonal tower and its wonderful carved nave ceiling dating from 1450. Also in the Market Place, you will find the lovely Buttercross dating from 1673, the old Town Hall, which is now a gallery and workshop venue managed by ACE arts, the old courthouse and the War Memorial. Find out more by clicking here and visiting our history section.

Along West Street, you will find more historic buildings including the 15th century Leaver’s Court and the 17th century Hext Almshouses. After spending some time taking in some of what Somerton has to offer, why not take a break for morning coffee at one of our tearooms or public houses. You could then spend the rest of your morning browsing some of our specialist shops. For lunch, you have a wide variety of country pubs and cafes.

There are many walks for all abilities which take you in and around Somerton. It also has the wonderful Viaduct Fishery specialising in coarse fishing with six well-stocked lakes. Regular competitions are held here with a beautiful and peaceful vista in which to relax in the heart of the Cary valley.

At our recreation ground we have a play area, skate park, floodlit tennis courts, basketball courts and rugby and football pitches. Somerton also has many events happening all year round outdoors and in any of our wonderful function rooms, including an annual week-long festival held in July, and there are full details at www.Somerton.co.uk

Somerton has a lot to offer and is a town that should definitely be on your itinerary when visiting the West Country. Our free car parks are
an added bonus. Good access to the M5 and A303 and bus routes from the surrounding large towns makes Somerton easy to reach. We are sure you will enjoy the visit.

Somerton is twined with Licciana Nardi, Tuscany, Italy and Sillé-le-Guillaume, Pays-de-la-Loire, France
