Of course there’s much more to Keynsham than Horace Batchelor’s famous Radio Luxembourg adverts of the 1950s and 60’s.

Nestled equidistant between the bustling, fast paced culture capital that is Bristol and the gentle, historical beauty that is Bath, many people pass between the two cities every day but have you ever thought about the wonders that lay waiting between the two?

Keynsham is a historic market town dating back to at least Roman times with 2 Roman Villas having been discovered to date – one of which is thought to be the grandest found in Britain! Many more Roman dwellings have recently been brought to light on the Keynsham Hams leading experts to believe Keynsham was once the lost Roman town of Trajectus!

In the Domesday Book the town is listed as Cainesham which means the home of St Keyne. Legend has it that the 5th century holy woman lived on the banks of the River Avon which at the time was infested with serpents. After some intervention from God the serpents were turned to stone and the land became inhabitable again.

In the 20th Century, the town became famous for Fry’s and then Cadbury’s chocolate at its Somerdale factory which following its closure is now being transformed into a state of the art retirement village and residential area.

The town sits on the confluence of the rivers Avon and Chew which meanders its way through the stunning Memorial Park. The 26 acre park is a jewel in Keynsham’s crown with people coming from all over the surrounding area to enjoy its vast greenery, café, bowling green, multi-sport area and bandstand which hosts musical entertainment from both local and further afield bands most weekends.

The Memorial Park also plays host to the hugely popular Keynsham Music Festival with a week-long line up of musical and theatrical events culminating in a weekend festival which in 2014 attracted visitors of around 20,000! The festival which takes place in the summer has been going for 15 years and showcases bands and locally sourced food, ciders and ales from the local area. Not only that but it’s one of the last free festivals in the South West!

During the colder, darker months the town comes alive with November’s Winter Festival which includes a procession through the High Street as well as community performances of song, dance and acting. Many of the towns shops open late – the perfect opportunity for some Christmas shopping!

As you would expect from a market town, Keynsham hosts the Somerset Farmers Market on the second Saturday of each month selling local crafts and tasty treats.

The high street is a hive of activity with people coming in from Bristol and the surrounding villages to enjoy a more relaxed Somerset way of life with Keynsham’s array of independent shops and fine selection of cafes, restaurants and historic pubs.

Getting to and from Keynsham couldn’t be easier with the town placed on the main railway line between Bristol and London with trains to Bristol, Bath, Frome and further afield stopping hourly. There are also a variety of bus services connecting Keynsham to Bristol, Bath, Radstock, Wells and South Gloucestershire.
