Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station

Hinkley Point C, on the Somerset coast, is the site of the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK for more than 20 years. Next to an operating nuclear power station, Hinkley Point B and one being decommissioned, Hinkley Point A; EDF Energy is building two new nuclear reactors that will provide low-carbon electricity for around six million homes.

Marking a significant milestone in the revitalisation of the UK’s nuclear power industry, Hinkley Point C will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions. The electricity it generates will avoid nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, or 600 million tonnes, over its 60-year lifespan.

It’s more than a nuclear power station - Hinkley Point C will produce many other economic and social benefits too. There are 25,000 employment opportunities, up to 1,000 apprenticeships and more than 60% of the project’s construction value is predicted to go to UK companies.

Hinkley Point C and the local area

EDF Energy is proud to call Somerset home, not just for the ten years of construction but during the 60 years of planned operations and beyond, which is why it is working with Somerset’s thriving tourism industry to promote the area as a place to live, work and visit.

Detailed plans and a large financial investment are the tangible reflection of EDF Energy’s commitment to supporting the local area. Protecting the tourism economy and ensuring it is in the best possible position to take advantage of the huge opportunities available, have been at the heart of planning. Alongside significant investment in skills, education and training, EDF Energy is also delivering wide-ranging plans to minimise the impact of the project on the local area. There is a £20 million Community Fund to be spent on improvements for communities close to Hinkley Point C.

Since 2015, Visit Somerset, Visit Exmoor, Exmoor National Park, three local authorities, and EDF Energy have worked closely with tourism providers, and their representatives, on a comprehensive range of projects and initiatives funded through £700,000 of investment from Hinkley Point C.
