Tour Explained

The Tour of Britain 2008 takes place over eight days from Sunday, 7th to Sunday 14th September. The race starts in London and finishes in Liverpool.

The Route

The South West stage will once again highlight some of the most beautiful countryside the UK has to offer.

Community Activities

There are lots of community activities and events taking place along the route. These activites are being developed weekly, so keep checking this website for the latest info.

Road Closures

The race is run with the intention of causing the minimum amount of disruption to traffic flow as it passes around the region.

South West Stage Archive

2007 The inaugural stage of the Tour of Britain South West was a huge success. Over 73,000 spectators lined the route from the Fleet Air Arm Museum through Exmoor to Taunton. The national route is also available to view.

Routes

Competitive Cycling

Serious cyclists can access a number of different organisations that offer the best training and facilities. It does not matter what your specialty is: MTB , BMX , road (below) or Triathlon , there is something for everyone.

BMX

BMX is one of the most exciting and challenging sports around today. Events such as the XGames have put BMX firmly on the global sporting map.

MTB

If God was a mountain biker, then he designed Somerset as his playground. Where else can you find terrain like that of the Blackdowns, the Quantocks or Exmoor? Not only that, but these are right on your doorstep.

Triathlon

Legend has it that three US Marines were arguing in a bar in Hawaii about which of their particular sporting disciplines was the toughest; running, swimming or cycling.

Non-Competitive Cycling

Somerset is a hive of activity for cycling, especially if you are interested in doing it non-competitively.

Health and Nutrition

Approximately 30-60 minutes before cycling it is sensible to have an easy to digest snack which is rich in carbohydrate and low in fat.

Insurance is often overlooked by most cyclists. However the dangers on the UK's congested roads and the threat of theft are as relevant to cyclists as they are to any other road user.

Exmoor Beast
