BikeSomerset > BIKE SOMERSET NEWS > Tour of Britain Team joined Sustrans Celebrations
The team were part of a convoy travelling 66 miles on the celebratory journey from Tiverton to Wells that stopped off for a welcome break in Taunton town centre at midday.
Somerset County Museum played host to the cyclists during their break, offering refreshments while they explored the Museum's new exhibition of cycling through the ages, 'On Yer Bike! From the Boneshaker to the Tour of Britain'.
The Tiverton to Wells ride was part of the weeklong Sustrans 'Channel Challenge', which took participants on a 300-mile circular trip around the South West from Bristol.
Cllr Justin Robinson, Deputy Leader of Somerset County Council, said: "Congratulations to all who have completed this mammoth cycle ride. Events like this and the Tour of Britain, which will visit the South West for the first time in September, will put Somerset firmly on the map, regionally, nationally and internationally."
Sustrans chief executive John Grimshaw said: " The Sustrans Channel Challenge is a unique anniversary ride and will certainly be an event to remember! The ride gives us a chance to thank people who have supported the charity over the past 30 years, and also highlight how important it is that people continue to support us over the next 30 years. With transport accounting for a quarter of all CO2 emissions it's vital that we all think about the effect the way we travel has on our health and the health of the planet and our work is as relevant today as it was when we begun in 1977."
