BikeSomerset / Competitive Cycling
Serious cyclists can access a number of different organisations that offer the best training and facilities. It does not matter what your specialty is: MTB, BMX, road (below) or Triathlon, there is something for everyone.

Road and circuit racing
The riders are set off together as a group and the first person across the line is the winner, and these take place either on the open road or closed circuit such as Merryfield, Ilton. To compete in this type of race you require a race licence available through British Cycling.
Time Trials
Riders are set off as individuals or in small teams to complete a set course in the quickest time. Distances range from 5 miles to 24-hour events. There are two main types of TT events: 'Open' events that you enter in advance, or 'Club' events where turn out on the day. In both cases you need to be in a 'Cycle Time Trials' club to ride, unless the event is run as a 'Come and try it'.
With most types of riding it is probably best to join a local cycling club. This is by far the easiest route and other members will be able to provide a vast amount of knowledge to aid you.
Team Tor 2000, based around Somerton and Glastonbury, organise weekly rides and host various races throughout the year, including 'Come and try it' events. The club is Club Mark and Go Ride accredited. It has 3 fully qualified British Cycling coaches, who are more than happy to help you out. For more info contact the membership Secretary Andrew Crocker.
Cycling Time Trials and British Cycling training information is available for the more 'road' minded cyclists. However, if you prefer the challenge of a triathlon, the British Triathlon Association is the governing body and has events and activities for people of all categories.
